If without the extension, the ticker symbol is trading on NYSE, AMEX or NASDAQ stock exchange. If with the ".TO" extension, the ticker symbol is trading on TSX. The easiest way to look up the stock is to go to Yahoo! finance site.

hqRocket™ downloader - the fastest FREE EOD data downloader available today

hqRocket™ downloader is the unique, extremely fast, FREE EOD data downloader which captures the data from the world markets. Currently in our database there are over 25,000 instruments from the North American markets.

There are no problems whatsoever to capture the data from any other world market. Also, the ticker symbols can be manually added to the list with any plain text editor (like Windows Notepad). The format of the ticker symbol must be in Yahoo! format (e.g. G.TO for Goldcorp traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange).

We tested the hqRocket™ downloader even with 56K modem. It took little over 35 minutes to update all 25,000 instruments. Now, that is fast!

It would take longer to download the data for the first time since hqRocket™ does capture the data from Jan 01, 1990.

The data is stored in flat files which are easily imported into any charting program. We would recommend FCharts SE (from Spacejock Software) which is the best free market data charting software that we've seen so far.

hqRocket™ downloader Installation Instructions

To install the hqRocket™ create the hqRocket subdirectory and unzip the contents of the hqRocket.zip file into it. You must have J2SE (JDK 1.4 and higher) and J2EE installed on your system in order to complete the installation. J2SE and J2EE are available for download free of charge from java.sun.com .

The hqRocket™downloader is highly portable and will run on any system that supports Java (Linux, etc.).

Running hqRocket™ downloader

On the Windows based system go to the hqRocket directory on the DOS shell and type:

download X

where X represents number of threads which you would like to run in parallel during download. Generally, the higher number of threads, the faster download. It all depends on how much memory you have, how fast your Internet connection is, etc. We would recommend X=10 as a good start for the cable modem connection.

Once you are finished with the download the data will be stored in the data subdirectory (one ticker symbol per file). The naming convention is as follows:

_TickerSymbol_d.txt

where TickerSymbol is the ticker symbol of the instrument in Yahoo! format.

In the directory 'list' there is a file symbolList.txt which you can manually change with any text editor, one ticker symbol per text line.

During download you will see lots of messages and the time stamp which is the local NewYork time.

Note that if you have lots of symbols in the list that you must have disk space available to store the data (25,000 symbols will fill your disk with almost 1GB of data).
